It’s situated at the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea and is bounded by Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon. Its most significant river, the Jordan River, flows via the Lake Hule, Lake Kinneret or Sea of Galilee all the method to the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is 411 meters below the sea level.
The Grotto of Annunciation was built to recall the episode in the bible where the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the youngster Jesus Christ. Mary’s Well is the source of water of Nazareth even during the time with the Byzantine Empire. Some feel that this is the precise area where Mary get the news from Gabriel that she would bear the Son of God. Another important attraction in Israel would be the location of Jerusalem.

It is something I can’t describe. It must be experienced to understand the weight of it. At 10:00 am today, April 12th, a siren sounded all across the country to commemorate Israel’s day of remembrance for the Holocaust vicitims and survivors. For two minutes the entire country comes to an abrupt halt – people on the sidewalks stop suddenly and stand at attention, the fast paced traffic on Israel’s streets and highways slows and roads become parking lots as drivers quickly exit and stand in reverence. For a moment in time we are cut off from our individual lives, pursuits and self interests. Nothing matters, nothing moves and all is silent as the ominous air raid alert blasts through the country.

Blessed to have grown up in such a sheltered, prosperous country, I had never heard such a siren until I came to Israel. If the landscape of people – suddenly frozen in their tracks – and the lifeless still frame where just moments before the pulse of activity was strong, were not enough to unnerve me, the screaming siren always thrusts a terrible stab of dread through my whole being and I think I must have just glimpsed a fleeting insight into the horrors of those who lived during those murderous years of World War II and the Final Solution.

Today I and my colleagues from the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ) attended the memorial services at Israel’s Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem. An Israeli friend of ICEJ who works there, told us that there were thriving communities of Jews that were invaded and evacuated in a single day with no trace of the lives that once filled the neighborhood just hours before- all the people gone in one ghastly moment. How fragile life is.

(a picture of one of the Holocaust Survivors who laid a wreath today)

Hearing this made me understand with greater keenness the impact of the two minute death in Israel when the siren sounds. What a formidable warning it cries. The Holocaust suddenly becomes personal to me and for a time I am no longer a passive observer to history but I’m standing in the story along side those snatched away from all the human and decent things we take for granted. I realize, with all my love for the Jewish people and desire to understand the past, how little I actually comprehend of the horrors of what happend and the potential dangers of the future. Lavished by the peace and prosperity bought by the blood of heroic soldiers who understood the delicate nature of freedom, I fear my generation has lost the ability to face the reality of evil. Evil is not gone; it was just sleeping for a time and coaxing us to slumber as it slinked out again to new actions.

Of course the most obvious threat is Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the opening ceremony for the memorial day, chided the world for weak and passive responses to Iran’s repeated threats to erase the Jewish state from the face of the earth. “We see at best mild protests, and these too seem to be fading.” President Shimon Perez declared, “It is our right and duty to demand of the nations of the world not to repeat their indifference, which has cost millions of human lives, including theirs.”

          ]]>

(picture I took at Yad Vashem today of Benjamin Netanyahu and Shimon Perez.)

The state of Iran and her leadership is frightening, but I found something to be far more disconcerting in the headlines of today’s Jerusalem Post, “Anti-Semitic violent attacks across the globe more than doubled in 2009.” The Stephens Roth Institute for the study of Contemporary Anti-Semitism and Racism at Tel Aviv University released a study demonstrating a 102% rise in documented cases of anti-Jewish violence. The numbers do not even include threats, insults and graffiti with anti-Jewish content.

The threat to Israel is not isolated in one country, it is growing in nations around the world. News like this makes me feel frightened for where the world is headed, desperate to join the efforts to reverse the course, and angry that the world has so quickly forgotten the lessons we thought were carved in stone, “Never Again.” The words taunt us, I think. And I begin to feel overwhelmed that we will fail in our promises.

After the wreath laying at Yad Vashem and before the name reading ceremony, Our dear friend Susanna Kokkonen, Director of the Christian Friends of Yad Vashem, walked us through the gardens where trees are planted to represent non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust. They are called the “Righteous Among the Nations.” Yad Vashem has planted 2000 trees in their honor but there are far more than 2000 who saved lives so the museum erected large plaques with thousands of names of the “Righteous” who risked all they had to protect Jews.

(Me and my Christian friends reading the names of the “Righteous Among the Nations”)

Susanna asked if we could all sit and pray together in the spot. It was a beautiful moment but suddenly I felt a pang of terror. Sharing that moment with my friends and hearing their earnest prayers for the survivors of the Holocaust, the church today and for Israel was powerful and moving, but a dread came over me. I was surrounded by thousands of names representing an even greater number of families and communities whose resolve had been like ours – only tested and proven. Those people gave everything… yet it was not enough. Why?

They stood like boulders in a way that many of us can only hope to emulate. Many lost family, possessions and even life as a result. Why was it not enough? Did they wait to long to speak out? Or maybe they did everything possible but the tide was too strong and there were too few of them. Are we any different today? With all of our resolve is there enough of us to ensure, “never again.”

Of course this in no way means that I want to do less, but I guess in a strange way it toughens my spirit in such a way that I can say, even if we cannot change the tide, we can cast a life line and even jump into the swells to save those being tossed about and driven under – even if it means we lose everything. Even if all hopes seems to be gone, I want to live like those in World War II who did not give way to hopelessness but did all they could do to safeguard the future.

As we finished praying I looked around and saw something new. For all the terror and death of the Holocaust, evil did not win. Yes, those names that surrounded us in the garden of the “Righteous Among the Nations” fought and won – even if they did not live to see the victory. The war was long and many battles were lost, but “righteousness” triumphed in the end.

I hope the promise of “never again” will hold fast, but today I realized that, though none of us can single handedly change the course of history, we can determine what course we will take. Should a terrible night fall again on this world, I would want to be counted among the “righteous.” Those people of honor and faith who lived in the darkest of times and yet never yielded to its power. They did not cave to the belief that day would never come and everyone should fall into step with the powers of the moment. No, they believed in more and today millions of Jews are alive and flourishing as a result.

We, each of us, have been placed upon the earth, as was Queen Esther, for such a time as this. How will we answer our call? May we be as the faithful as those who stood against Hitler, against authorities, against communities and even against their own families for the sake of others.

As we remember the victims and survivors today, let us also pause to honor, and strive to emulate, those non-Jews who abandoned safety for righteousness. If ever tested, may we be found as faithful.

Hasan, Yahya Comment: To: ICHIKAELI MARO Daily News.
From: Prof. Hasan Yahya
Early in the morning of Monday, your flowery article was the first to read. and found my self the urge to share with you some points may be included in your coming analysis of the the Middle East conflict.
The analysis is great, and credited to be close to perfect. Bur I think it is missing depth on some obstacles to make the changes possible for the United States image worldwide. I have short comments on the article which I agree one hundred percent with the writer of his brilliant description and analysis to the outstanding organization of the historical inauguration, even though it describes fully the state of Tanzania, which I believe it was right to do so, because Tanzania is similar to many other countries in Africa and Asia , heading toward modernity and democracy.
1. I agree with you that “The inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th and the first African-American President of the most powerful nation on earth was received with joy and happiness by many people globally – with many hailing him as the President who has been widely accepted across the world.” In fact the world is amazed how two millions gathered in a small place for a celebration. It reminds me of the organization of two million people came from all corners of the world to perform pilgrimage every year in Makka, Saudi Arabia. Such organization has to be recognized, as Muslims too have learned the American way of organization and that they can deal rationally with plans for peace in the Middle East.

2. And that he was also credited for his exemplary communication skills. And that his inauguration was historic. ” in the first three days he proved his communication skills by calling important leaders in the Middle East.

          ]]>

3. And that he said: “To the Muslim world, we embrace a new way forward based on mutual interest and mutual respect.”

I wish as an American to see the United States as the most powerful nation on earth to change its position in the UN from one sided vote [most times Veto] when it comes to Israeli-Arab conflict over Palestine matter to a more respectful stand of neutrality when it comes to human rights principle. The rage of Muslims around the world and many other segments in the free world through demonstrations had its roots as a consequence of misguided foreign policy in the last forty years. I think it will be difficult to change course overnight as you said. But America has proved as a capitalist system does not carry the seeds of its destruction as Marx said, Because America is using its approaches scientifically and rationally. Unfortunately this approach was not publicized in foreign policy matters in the Middle East. America has to accept the following facts that:
- Israel is an occupying other people’s land since 1967, even Hamas accepts that.
- Palestinian refugees were not repatriated for their lost land according UN resolution number 194.
- Arab states [Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria, supported the USA to get rid of Unleash Saddam Hussein from Kuwait first and from earth second.
- The Arab recent plan submitted by Saudi Arabia, the leading state NOT only for Arab countries, but to almost all Muslim countries. Such a plan I believe would be a good start to be accepted by the US and Israel which will lead to cultural normalization as I stated in my theory: Crescentology for Conflict Management.
- Jerusalem is well respected place for all religions. It should remain as such under International administration may be from the NGO rational groups, to be an open place for all. Even though part of it the capital of State of Israel and part of it the capital of the State of Palestine.
- 242 is an important UN resolution in spite of the ambiguity about some words in it, should be considered as a workable document to solve the conflict over Palestine.
Recognition of the above facts and taking them into consideration will help regain the US respectful position and reduce rage among the Arabs and Muslims worldwide and satisfy millions of people supporting the Palestinian cause to live in peace side by side with Israel as a state too. Such change then will translate “embrace the new way forward based on mutual interest and mutual respect.”
This have to be seen in the UN resolutions. This I doubt, and it will be hard to be taken by President Obama without Jewish understanding of the Palestinian claims and without the acceptance of the above facts. I think Hamas first have to taken out of the terrorism list made unjustly by the previous Administration. The rationality of Hamas have to be exploited for peace by understanding human rights for both Israelis and Palestinians. Therefore, I believe that Hamas have to be negotiated side by side with the Palestinian Authority united in one Palestinian team as far as we expect that Netanyahu hard line party will win next month.
In general the analysis was balanced for the purpose of its writer, I can’t blame him, but highly respect his talent to analyze the historic celebration .of the 44th president of the United States. [This comment will appear also on www.hasanyahya.com.

This crowd pleasing prediction of peace has been made by Ms Rice despite four fruitless years of intense international diplomacy to achieve just that solution by America, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union – the Quartet – under their meticulously detailed and crafted Roadmap first published in 2003.

The United Nations News Service heralded the Roadmap at the time as a:

“performance-based and goal-driven roadmap, with clear phases, timelines, target dates, and benchmarks aiming at progress through reciprocal steps by the two parties in the political, security, economic, humanitarian, and institution-building fields, under the auspices of the Quartet. The destination is a final and comprehensive settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict by 2005, as presented in President Bush’s speech of 24 June, and welcomed by the EU, Russia and the UN in the 16 July and 17 September Quartet Ministerial statements.”

Not one of these goals has been remotely achieved – an abysmal failure by anyone’s standards -especially given the amount of political, financial and diplomatic clout vested in the Quartet.

Yet speaking at a joint media conference on 2 August with Mahmoud Abbas – the Palestinian Authority (PA) President and Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Executive Chairman – Ms Rice was decidedly upbeat when she said:

“I want to note that we will have a discussion about the political discussions that you are having on a bilateral basis with [Israel’s] Prime Minister Olmert. The Prime Minister said to me that he looks forward to continued discussions with you and that he is ready to discuss the fundamental issues that will lead to negotiations soon for the creation of a Palestinian state. And I know that that is your desire too, and the United States wants to support that bilateral track.”

When asked by an inquiring reporter as to what those “fundamental issues” might be, Ms Rice gave this remarkable reply:

          ]]>

“ I believe that the word “fundamental” speaks for itself. And the desire to move toward a two-	state solution seems to me to be there on both sides, and there are a lot of issues that are going to have to be discussed in order to get to a two-state solution.”

Sorry Ms Rice – every conceivable “fundamental issue” there is – and that you seem even too frightened to specifically identify – was discussed in detail in 2000 at Camp David and Taba in negotiations between President Bill Clinton, then PA and PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israel’s then Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Those negotiations led to the rejection of the two state solution offered by Israel in 90% of the West Bank and Gaza and effectively ended any prospect of the two state solution ever becoming a reality unless there was a total revolution in the thinking of the PA and the PLO.

One of the fundamental issues on which those negotiations foundered was the failure of Mr Arafat to recognise any political rights of the Jews to sovereignty in any part of the West Bank and Gaza – a policy that had been maintained by the PLO without change since 1964, by the PA since its formation in 1994 and by Mr Abbas as head of both organisations to this very day.

Those political rights were recognised by France and Great Britain in 1920, formalised by unanimous vote of all 51 members of the League of Nations in 1922, endorsed by a joint resolution of both Houses of the Congress of the United States in the same year, and preserved by the United Nations Charter in 1945.

The Quartet’s failure to insist on these international agreements being recognised and accepted by the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organisation remains one of the principal causes for the Quartet’s Roadmap collapsing into the total chaos it is today.

Statements such as Ms Rice’s are just diplomatic doublespeak, empty grandstanding and devoid of reality. They only serve to hold those making them open to ridicule and loss of credibility as the objective they so earnestly desire – the Quartet’s two state solution – continues to elude them.

It is surely time for Ms Rice to put the following questions to Mr Abbas to determine whether he is really sincere in his desire for a two state solution.

1.	Does the Palestinian Authority accept and recognise the legality of

	(i)	Article 6 of the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine giving the Jews the right to closely settle State lands and waste lands not required for public purposes in the West Bank?

(ii)	Article 80 of the United Nations Charter which preserves the above right?

(iii)	Security Council Resolution 242 – which does not require Israel to withdraw from all the territories occupied in the Six Day War and recognises Israel’s right to live in peace within secure and recognised boundaries?

2.	Does the Palestine Liberation Organisation and the Palestinian Authority recognise the existence of the State of Israel and have they abandoned violence and armed struggle against Israel?

3.	If the answer to 2 is “yes” – when will Mr Abbas call a meeting of the Palestinian National Council to revoke articles 2, 3, 6-10, 13-23 and 30 of the PLO Charter- all of which are in direct conflict with the principles laid out in question 2.

If Ms Rice can get a positive response from Mr Abbas to these crucial questions, she might well be able to make a meaningful statement on the future of the Quartet’s two state solution.

If she is too embarrassed to put these questions to Mr Abbas or is too afraid to hear the answers, then maybe she can get Mr Olmert to ask them during his “political discussions” with Mr Abbas.

If neither wants to take the plunge then maybe someone in the press corps might be emboldened or even induced to put these questions to Mr Abbas at one of his next media conferences. The answers will certainly create front page headlines no matter what response is evoked.

Until these questions are answered one thing is crystal clear – any hope of the Quartet’s two state solution ever eventuating is doomed to failure.

Israel is an exciting and rewarding place to travel. The country is brim-full of ancient historical and non secular sites, impossible to believe geographic variation for such a little country, great food, usually wonderful weather, and an engaging blend of cultures. Sadly it is a country in conflict, and the portrayal of this region on the news frightened a large amount of travelers away from this interesting land.

From a geographic perspective, Israel is so different from region to area that it feels like many different states in one. The coastal plain which encompasses the cities of Tel-Aviv and Haifa features rolling sand dunes and palm trees, pretty beaches, and mild but really wet subtropical weather. It is a great area to absorb the sun, enjoy nightlife, and absorb the ambience of modern Israel’s culture. Yafo is a part of Tel Aviv, and is a restored traditional city all the way back to biblical times. Further north in Haifa you can visit the world HQ of the Baha’i faith. Further north in Akko you can visit the Medieval old city and experience its Arabic atmosphere.

          ]]>

To the east of Haifa and Akko lies the Galilee region, the area where Jesus was raised. Nazareth is populated mainly with Israeli Arab citizens, so you can experience the contrast with Jewish Israeli culture. This is where Jesus walked on water, and where John the Baptist was baptised. There is some beautiful views in the area, and some beautiful churches devoted to Jesus and events concerning him in the area.

In the south of Israel lies the Negev desert, the latest and driest part of Israel. Its main focal point is the resort city of Eilat, which is famous for scubadiving, snorkelling, and pleasant weather year round. The summers in Eilat , however , are freakishly hot, infrequently reaching fifty degrees. Bring a bathing suit!

And of course the jewel in the crown of any trip to Israel is Jerusalem. Lying in the Judaen hills and having a faith heritage rivalled by no other city on Earth, Jerusalem has a cultural atmosphere like nowhere else in Israel. This is the place where King Solomon ruled, where Muhammad rose to heaven, and where Jesus was crucified. The Old city of Jerusalem lies in East Jerusalem and has a Palestinian majority, so you can experience the Palestinian way of living while also seeing the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian holy sites inside its walls. The city of Bethlehem lies just to the south of Jerusalem, but inside the Palestinian autonomous area. Many travellers visit Bethlehem and it is generally safe.

Talking to Israelis and Palestinians and understanding their country, its conflict, and its cultures is a fascinating and eye-opening experience.

Billy Bobb is a zealous traveler and citizen of the world. He could be a geography nerd and can study maps for hours on end. His blog Free Printable Maps features maps and travel destination profiles such as

Israel and Iran do not have official diplomatic relations and neither country has recognized the other since the Islamic Republic’s creation in the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated further since Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s election in 2005.

The nuclear program of Iran with its potential to develop nuclear weapons, together with the anti-Israel rhetoric of the President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and his demand for “the regime occupying Jerusalem” to “vanish from the page of time”, has led Israelis to fear an eventual attack from Iran.

Israel has repeatedly voiced concern over Iran’s nuclear program, which Israel believes Iran intends to use to produce nuclear weapons. The Israeli drumbeat for a military strike against Iran’s nuclear program grow louder and louder. Obama administration officials, as well as U.S. lawmakers and European diplomats, passionately made the argument this spring that tough sanctions on Iran were necessary to avoid war. But contrary to their predictions, the drumbeat for war — particularly from Israel – has only increased since the U.N. Security Council adopted a new resolution against Tehran in June.

          ]]>

Even an Iran that doesn’t have nuclear weapons but that can build them would damage Israel’s ability to deter militant Palestinian and Lebanese organizations. It would damage the image of Israel as the sole nuclear-armed state in the region and undercut the myth of its invincibility. Gone would be the days when Israel’s military supremacy would enable it to dictate the parameters of peace and pursue unilateral peace plans.

This could force Israel to accept territorial compromises with its neighbors in order to deprive Iran of points of hostility that it could use against the Jewish state. Israel simply would not be able to afford a nuclear rivalry with Iran and continued territorial disputes with the Arabs at the same time.

Tensions are rising and rising; latest development is the Stuxnet worm. An elite Israeli military unit responsible for cyberwarfare has been accused of creating a virus that has crippled Iran’s computer systems and stopped work at its newest nuclear power station. What’s next?

To keep a close eye on this delicate situation you can visit http://israeliran.net. This site will keep you up-to-date with the latest news headlines, video’s and background articles.

Hope for the best!

In case of a synthetic materials rug, it may be washed with water and left to dry out. If your rug turns into too damp and smelly, just hold it out or leave it out in the solar, but if it goes back to being smelly or starts to wear down, then it is time to get a brand new one.
